Top 5 Ways To Overcome Failure In Life
- Are you frustrated because you just fell short of achieving a certain goal?
- Do struggle to see a way out of a difficult situation?
- Are you consistently frustrated because you’re not making progress in your life and with certain pursuits?
If you are ready to overcome failure then you need to be willing to transition your mindset and to learn how to find the solutions you seek. The goal of today’s article is to help shed some light on this. The goal is to help you transition the way you think and view any given situation. Though today’s topic is a bit different it applies directly to how I encourage my students and to the success of your training.
Overcome Failure
Before jumping into any of this you must accept a certain belief first. You have to understand and believe without a doubt that your mind is an extremely powerful tool. You have to understand that your mind is the vehicle that will guide your outcomes.
Think of it like this. Your mind is yours, but that little voice inside of you is you coaching you. Now that may seem like an obvious assessment, but have you really thought of it that way? Maybe you have and maybe you haven’t. Either way this is why it’s critical that you understand the power of that inner voice of “You.”
1. Failure is not fatal: One of the first steps to overcome failure is realizing that failure is NOT fatal. This is the case if you can accept that and use the opportunity of a failed attempt at something to learn from it.
If you’re not learning from a failure then you will always fail because you’ll be more susceptible to repeating the same mistakes. If you can accept that failure is NOT fatal then you will possess the mindset to figure out a winning formula as you move ahead towards your next attempt.
You do the same thing when making an attempt at a new PR in the weight room. If you make an attempt at that deadlift PR and fail do you just throw your hands up in frustration and quit training? Well you may throw your hands up in frustration, but do you quit training? No, you probably don’t. You keep pushing and maintaining the necessary consistency to overcome that failed PR attempt the next time.
2. Focus on the solution not the problem: The next step in overcoming failure is not allowing your focus to latch on to the problem. If you just got your ass handed to you in a loss during a sporting event, or during a failed business opportunity then you can’t dwell on the loss.
Sure you can learn from the loss by focusing on developing a better winning strategy. If you focus on the “problem,” or the “loss” itself too much then you’re going to remain static, or worse.
Often times I’ve found a winning solution will be staring me in the face after some of the worst losses. You just have to take the time to look for it.
3. Detach: This is probably one of the hardest things for people to do. Detachment requires that you not emotionally attach yourself to the venture, the person, or the loss. It’s a bit tricky.
Don’t misunderstand…this doesn’t mean that you don’t care about what just happened, or about what you’re doing. No, this simply means that you can emotionally detach yourself from a given situation in order to find clarity.
To understand this you need to know that if you’re emotionally reacting instead of logically thinking about a situation then you can continue to expect negative outcomes. In order to overcome failure you MUST always strive to think with a clear head instead of emotionally reacting to the situation.
4. Mastermind the next plan: In order to turn a failure into a success you have to learn to mastermind the next plan. What does this mean?
Well think of it like going to the drawing board and writing out a plan of action. Now once you’ve done this you want to get other eyeballs on the plan.
You want feedback from other people. You need to seek out people to help offer ideas for your plan as sometimes a different set of eyes can see holes in a plan that you might not see.
It’s no different than hiring a strength coach, or trainer to get you physically fit to perform in a sport. You may know how to do some things, but a professional with experience and new perspective will help you to bulletproof your plan.
To mastermind your next plan means you are developing your next approach to be more efficient. This will increase your likelihood of success.
Think of this way. If you’re a race car driver and you keep losing races because you keep blowing engines then your focus should be on why you’re losing engines. This could be for a number of reasons, but you and your team better look at why that keeps happening in order to fix it.
If you don’t fix it then you’ll just keep blowing up engines and losing races. The key is to make that engine better whether it’s a fault in the design, or personnel failing to build the engine properly. Either way you need to mastermind a plan of action to succeed.
5. Take complete ownership: Ok, this particular one is going to be rejected by most people in today’s society. I don’t care if you employ a 1000 people and keep falling short of sales goals…it’s your fault.
If you have failed over and over to get that job you want, or if you are not making movement with your business then it’s because of you. If you’re not happy with your current standing in life it’s because of you…and no one else.
Sure, people can and will take advantage of you, lie to you, cheat you, steal from you, and even try to kill you. These things are all terrible and they do all involve people doing bad things to you.
However, it’s not what they do to you that carries the greatest weight, it’s how you react to each situation that carries the most weight. Your ability to take extreme ownership (as Jocko Willink would say) is how you will overcome the failure.
Taking ownership is not an easy thing to do. I never said it would be easy. In fact, it’s one of the hardest things you can do in life, but that’s life.
However I will say that if you can accept that you are primarily responsible for your own life and journey it is the most liberating thing in the world to experience. To know that you and you alone can blaze your own trail and build a path to new horizons is the most powerful thing for one to accept.
However, the ONLY way to experience this is to accept the belief that you are at fault for both your success and your failure. At the end of the day when the smoke clears it’s that guy, or girl you see in the mirror that makes all the decisions.
Overcome Failure: The Takeaway
I understand failure isn’t easy. It’s one of the most challenging things to overcome, but it’s also unavoidable. Failing is merely a series of stepping stones in life to get you to where you want and need to go. You just have to have the courage to view it that way. If you don’t then you will become susceptible to a victim mentality and this sort of mentality is toxic.
This sort of mentality is more like a virus and can spread to destroy a community, organization, a business, a team, and even family and relationships. I see this all the time. Don’t allow this to happen to you.
