A Proud Strength Coach That Had Some Students BRING IT!

David & Goliath by artydesigns

This weekend one of my dedicated students placed number 2 in the NATION at the WKA nationals! Jet you are a champion my friend and I just wanted to take this opportunity to tip my cap to you Jeff, Mark, and Dan this week for being dedicated to the strength and conditioning workouts that I throw in front of you! Unfortunately I wasn’t able to make the trip, but was keeping up with the play by play through facebook. It was my understanding that Jet (my student) was outsized by most of the competition, but that he pretty much decimated everyone in his path on his way to the championship bout. I would say that at the young age of 19 with a bit of experience he’ll be in that number 1 spot in no time!

Are We Members Of Team Bring It?

I would say HELL YES! I would like to think all of my students implement the TEAM BRING IT attitude! This is something that I work hard to instill into the mindset of my training. In the past couple of months I have had 4 students to produce some amazing results. Jeff and Dan both qualified for the Nationals in the Toughest Mudder. That same weekend was the showing for Mark who smashed the competition at the North American Grappling Association (NAGA) tournament. Mark told me that in the championship bout his opponent walked over to him afterwards and said something to the effect of “Dude you are strong as hell!” If I misquoted that Mark I apologize, but I think everyone gets the point.

Order Authentic Russian Kettlebells

In addition to all of this my 4th young Jedi Jet went up to nationals this weekend and destroyed the competition. He lost by decision in the championship bout, but Jet also told me that his “power was ridiculous,” meaning that he was throwing guys around the ring like a sack of potatoes! That’s what a strength and conditioning coach loves to hear! I get a lot of comfort in hearing testimonies such as this. I want my students to have that TEAM BRING IT attitude so thanks for the intro Rock!

I had them all on similar programs. I enjoyed working a periodization program for getting the guys prepared all the way up to the date of the competition. Careful planning and utilizing strength and conditioning workouts that were practical for what all the competitors would be facing was obviously the goal. For the most part half of the program involved athletic performance and conditioning related drills such as speed, agility, and plyometrics. The other half of the strength and conditioning workouts were made up of a healthy dose of iron consisting of kettlebells, barbell deadlifts, and cleans to name a few ingredients!

I love utilizing swings, snatches, and get ups, but I also threw in some single leg deadlifts utilizing the kettlebell for added hip stability, balance, and core stability…

This is one that I know has been a real asset in terms of helping the athletes to stabilize during the act of kicking (at least for my fighters) and for the crazy balance beams and agility obstacles that the guys had to face during the Tough Mudder. All four athletes had to have a significant level of cardiovascular fitness which was mostly achieved within the cardio/strength design that I had in their strength and conditioning workouts leading up to competition. The way the training is structured they don’t have a lot of time to stand around. During these bouts the nervous system is in full gear and the athletes are constantly focusing on the next drill in front of them.

MMA Overload

All in all, it has been a great 3 months watching these guys tear it up come gameday! I honestly new that they all would do very well, but I have to admit that I was a little bit surprised that they all performed at such high levels. Whenever I get the opportunity I like to use it to give a shout out to my students. I could sit here and write for a year without stopping if I were to brag on all of them. Anyways, when you guys read this you better share it with everyone you know or else there will be  hell to pay come your next strength and conditioning workout!
