Having a strong back is crucial to developing and maintaining a healthy strong body regardless of the goals of the individual. The posterior chain is something that is too neglected with much of the general population when looking to develop an optimal level of fitness and a rock solid foundation of strength. Now having said this there are layers involved in building a strong back…and one big layer involves making sure your shoulders are as stable as iron.
Ronin: A samurai with no lord or master; a lone warrior.
Today’s workout is called The Ronin Workout because I think it’s fitting for those of you who may like to train predominately on your own, or with a very select group, to just “get it done.” In this way you are self guided, much like a Ronin samurai that may seek out a mission to accomplish on his/her own.

Is Heavy Lifting Bad For You?
So I got a question from one of my readers the other day in my email inbox asking if heavy lifting is bad for one’s health? Well, believe it or not I did think about this one just a bit more than you may have guessed before just shooting back the quick and easy response.
Because my brain was stimulated into that next level of thinking prior to answering the question I figured that I would use that extra brain activity for the subject of this very post. I figured you might enjoy benefitting from all those brain waves so I thought I’d go ahead and do my best to give you a more detailed response about all that heavy lifting right here.
X marks the spot again big guy! As you may know I did a profile concerning Student X for the ladies and now it’s time to do one for us guys on men’s fitness. Once again inquiring minds want to know about what goes on inside my head when looking at a new or potential trainee. In the last blogisode I made up a profile called Student X to demonstrate some common issues that I encounter with folks when getting them started back on track with getting in shape.
The reason I’m doing this is to drive home the point that health clubs make my head want to explode, but I guess if folks are doing something it is better than doing nothing at all. I guess what I’m trying to say is that if folks are exercising that is a great thing, however the point of Student X is to show how folks more often than not end up doing harm to their body by not understanding how the body functions. The names and identities have been changed in this blogisode to protect the innocent from feeling too stupid. Um anyways read and enjoy!
The one thing that I’ve learned in my 35 years of existence is that you can’t fix stupid you can only hope to contain it. Now with this being said there is a difference between ignorance and stupidity that I am going to point out, especially as it relates to strength training and the gym D-Bag. You know the ones I’m talking about. Yep, I’m talking about those collar popping, bluetooth talking during arm curls, 1 rep of bench every 5 minutes kind of guys that spend more time talking about what they’re going to be doing Saturday night rather than training for any significant purpose other than being a D-Bag.
